study "From Helsinki to Gothenburg" on the European environmental
policy integration process had met remarkable interest among European
policy makers. Thanks to the Austrian Ministry for Environment which
had commissioned the study by Philipp Schepelmann, Benjamin Görlach,
Fritz Hinterberger and Stephan Moll had been promoted all over Europe.
In addition to a presentation at the European Institute for Public Administration
in Maastricht, both the Austrian ministry and the European Commission
organised a conference with up to a 100 participants where the findings
of the study were presented by Philipp Schepelmann. The study is available for download at: www.seri.at/europe/completed/environmentalintegration.htm ESTO Project: National Research Activities and Sustainable Development SERI got invited to participate in the ESTO (European Science and Technology Observatory) project: "National Research Activities and Sustainable Development". Five European research organizations will survey and assess national research initiatives in support of sustainable development in Germany, UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Austria and Portugal. They will map the key players in these countries, identify research programs which either focus on sustainable development or have sustainable development as one major reseach criteria. An analyses of these programs will identify good practices and gaps in current sustainable development related R&D activities in Europe. SERI will perform these tasks for Austria (Gisela Bosch and Fritz Hinterberger) and Portugal (Suhita Osorio-Peters). The project is planned to finish in January 2002. The ESTO Newletter Issue 17 describes the project in details and can be obtained under the following address: http://sun.vdi-online.de/tz-pt/zt/english/esto.html or email to [email protected] SERI study on unpaid work and standard of living At

Main concept of the dematerialisation is to create products and services with a reduced use of natural resources. This saves the environment, helps to reduce costs and leads to innovations and new market opportunities. You can learn more about this exciting concept at www.seri.at/MIPSAcademy. 3. There are new chances for education by telelearning. And NGOs and other civil society groups are following business onto the global stage. For

Nowadays, we have realised that the environment could be a very strong economic driving force by initiating innovative processes. In order to promote and foster the idea of the environment as a driving economic force, particularly now that we are facing problems related to EU-enlargement, the Regional Ministers of the Environment of the Province of Carinthia, Austria, would like to cordially invite all regional ministers and political leaders in the environmental field from all regions within the European Union and the Candidate Countries to participate in the Conference. Biannual ISEE Conference on For
more than 30 years, environmental questions have been brought to the
forefront of international development concerns. Since the 1970s, researchers
from various economic, social and natural science domains have sought
to formulate new approaches to the fundamental challenges of poverty,
health, food security, environmental quality and economic and social
justice, in the changing world context of international trade, technological
innovation and communication (phenomena now often summarised under the
heading "globalisation"). These are the sorts of preoccupations
that led to the creation, more than 10 years ago, of the International
Society for Ecological Economics (ISEE), and to the emergence of ecological
economics networks world-wide. For more information and for participation details please visit the conference website at: http://193.51.42.100/eee/ISEEtunisia2002.html. Earth Summit 2002 online debate Ten years after the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio, the world's nations will gather again in Johannesburg next September to review progress and plan for the future. Preparations for the World Summit on Sustainable Development 2002 are well under way, emphasising a transparent and participatory approach. The
Earth Summit 2002 online debate is a electronic forum hoping to initiate
a focused and constructive public discussion on some of the priority
issues. We invite people to share their ideas, knowledge and diverse
perspectives. It's your chance to speak out on 'What Earth Summit 2002
should be trying to achieve?' Key writers and thinkers on sustainable
development will start the debate. Everyone is encouraged to join in. You
can join the forum throughout September 2001 at www.lifeonline.org/debate Friends of the Earth Lifeboat-campaign By clicking the Link below you'll find a few impressions of the Lifeboat action on July 21st in Bonn, Germany, during the world climate talks. 3000 people came to construct the 30m long Lifeboat for the world climate. They brought their messages to world leaders on wooden planks from all over the world. Go

SERI is the first "virtual" research institute with associated researchers all over Europe. The Sustainable Europe Research Institute, together with a supporting legal association, exists since September 1999 according to Austrian Law. The headquarters have been established in Vienna. We would like to invite you to participate in this undertaking. The Sustainable Europe Research Institute (SERI) is a Pan-European think tank aiming to explore sustainable development options for European societies. SERI's research agenda and methodology is based on previous work carried out by Friends of the Earth and the Wuppertal Institute. The Institute aims to develop the concept of environmental space and shows ways to substantially reduce the resource throughput of modern industrial societies. The research carried out by members of SERI supports the dialogue within European civil society. It specifically aims to further develop the exchange of ideas between environmental citizens organisations, governments, trade unions and industry. The scientific dialogue SERI aims to engender is supported by its web page and this newsletter, conferences, meetings as well as publications. Have a nice day your SERI-Team. SERI-Infomail
