Michael Carley

CV

Michael Carley, a British and a Canadian citizen, is Professor of Planning and Housing in the Centre for Environment and Human Settlements at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, Scotland.
His research includes organisational development for global, national and local sustainable development; and management of city-regions around the world.

Michael was a member of the Advisory Group of the Sustainable Europe Campaign.
With Philippe Spapens, he has written a guide to environmental space - Sharing the World: Sustainable Living and Global Equity in the 21st Century, currently available in English, Italian and Japanese with Chinese and Polish editions underway.

In addition to his urban research programme, Michael is currently reviewing organisational options for improved participation in global governance issues including regional fresh water and fisheries management, for the World Humanities Action Trust. A book is being prepared for publication in 2001.

Locally, Michael is a board member of Edinburgh's Civic Trust, past member of the Lord Provost's Commission for Sustainable Development, a founder of the Scottish Pedestrian Action Group, and active in the UK's Pedestrian Association.
