Reducing
traffic!?
Edinburgh
escaped the blight of excessive road building in the 1960s and 1970s.
Current travel trends are, nonetheless, gravely unsustainable - presenting
a challenge, which Edinburgh City Council acknowledges.
A number
of travel reduction policies have been developed in recent years, with
some degree of success. It is questionable, however, that these can ever
achieve sustainability as policies elsewhere in the city continue to promote
travel-generating development.
Edinburgh's mixed experience with travel reduction can provide useful
lessons fo other cities.
