Sustainable development calls for an important reduction of the absolute use of ressources. One possible strategy to achieve this, is to use the potentials of the information society in combination with the right macroeconomic tools and challenging changes in lifestyles. ABSOLUTE DEMATERIALISATION in the INFORMATION SOCIETY The new information society is linked with service economy and information technologies. It involves dematerialized products and high process efficiencies. It could potentially bring us important reductionof material flows and environmental impacts. However the benefits of new technologies and the gains of productivity are being annihilated by increases of total material inputs linked to higher consumption and mobility: the rebound effect. The material flows should be studied at different levels. The Macro-level: The process of globalisation and what kind of policy tools are required. The Micro level analysis of the experiences of successful communities and consumers using new technologies and developing innovative eco-lifestyles How the successful characteristics could be improved and disseminated.
