Environmental impact of population growth (completed)

Commissioned by the Ministry for Environment SERI has calculated the environmental impact of population growth in Luxemburg. Four sectors are analysed
- energy consumption
- traffic
- land
- waste

SERI shows that it is not inevitable that the growth of population and the economy will reduce the quality of life in Luxemburg. The factors population growth, economic growth and resource consumption are in a non-linear relation. This results in higly diverse trends of environmental pressure.

Pathfinder - Developing new strategic targets for the sustainable societies programme of Friends of the Earth (current)

Starting from the need that the sustainability debate lacks momentum and strategy, the European network of Friends of the Earth has started a process that will revive the concept of a sustainable Europe and bring it back onto the agenda of the groups of Friends of the Earth.

The "5th Environmental Conference of Regional Ministers and Political Leaders in the EU" will take place in Villach (Carinthia / Austria) from 27th to 28th September 2001.

Environmental Mediation in Europe (completed)

Mediation is frequently overrated and misinterpreted. The Use of mediation and mediation-like processes initiate a debate within society and may increase the acceptance of strategies for a sustainable development.
SERI presented a study with suggestions as to how a European environmental discourse might be structured.

European Regional Policy (planned)

The promotion of European regions and of the Accession Countries has impacts on the social, economical and environmental development. Appropriate indicators for the evaluation of regional policy therefore have to cover all these aspects
