Looking for interns

SERI is constantly looking for students of all disciplines as interns. If
you want to spend some (6-12) exiting weeks with one of our research groups in Vienna, Cologne or Lisbon, please write an eMail to [email protected].

We ask you to provide a short cv and a letter of interest stating in which of our research fields you would especially like to work with. We usually cover for your travel and stay, but can unfortunately not pay a salary.

SERI and social sustainability

SERI is sharpening its profile in the field of social sustainability. While preparing project applications, SERI established contacts to scientists from different disciplines interested in this issue, and we hope to extend and intensify this network long before the applications have been decided about and regardless of the outcome of the decision.

Marcus Stewen finished his PhD exams

Marcus Stewen has finished his PhD exams and can now be called "Doctor rerum
politicum".

The theme of his doctoral thesis is:
"Inputorientierte Umweltpolitik in der Sozialen Marktwirtschaft - Wirtschaftspolitische Analyse einer "nachhaltigen" Reduktion der Stoffstroeme" (Inputoriented Environmental Policy in a Social Market Economy - An economic policy analysis of dematerialization").

Francois Schneider in Portugal

Dr. François Schneider will work one year at INETI-Cendes in Lisbon from February 2002 as a visiting scientist. His main activity will be on the dematerialisation at the regional level.

Fred Luks became vice-chairman of VÖÖ

In 2001, Fred Luks has been elected vice-chairman of the Vereinigung für Ökologische Ökonomie (VÖÖ), the association of ecological economists in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Fred will be responsible for issues involving (un?)economic growth, for international contacts, and for policy-oriented activities.
The VÖÖ will organize a conference on the role of the state for sustainable development. The meeting will take place on April 25/26/27 in Heidelberg (Germany).

Roman Mesicek at Helsinki conference

Roman Mesicek spoke on Material flows and natural resources, in the light of current technological advances of society, in front of Government and local administrators, policy makers, scientists and experts, private sector State and Possible Futures of Natural Resources on February 6-7, 2002 in Helsinki, Finland.

The two-day-seminar explored the state and future of natural resources from both scientific and practical perspective. On Wednesday, a mini-seminar for invited delegates dealed with biodiversity, sustainable use of natural resources and policy-making.

EASEY project

Roman Mesicek and Gisela Bosch took part in two workshops organised by the Project EASEY (www.easey.at) dealing with the impact the financial market could have on enterprises on their way towards sustainability.
The Project which is part of the Austrian cluster "Fabrik der Zukunft" (factory of tomorrow) plans to develop an sustainability index for the Austrian stock exchange market. Therefore it organises various workshops, to ensure stakeholder participation.

SERI at the Austrian Council for Sustainable Development

Fritz Hinterberger was invited to join the Austrian Council for Sustainable Development, a body which mainly discusses Austrian positions in international processes such as UNCSD or WTO.

2. Project-Overview
News from our projects, our other work and new research fields

EU project on sustainability research in Europe

The EU Commission has awarded SERI its first EU project as project coordinator. Its duration is 18 months and is called:
"Adaptive Integration of Research and Policy for Sustainable Development - Prospect for the European Research Agenda."

Together with our five partners (The University of Durham, Centro de Estudos Informação e Formação para o Ambiente - CEIFA, The Wuppertal Institute, European Commission - Joint Research Centre - Institute for Prospective Technological Studies - IPTS, and European Commission - Joint Research Centre - Institute for the Protection and Security of the Citizen - IPSC) we will link in a mutual learning process several European research programmes aimed at sustainability-related technology development and evaluate them according to a jointly developed set of quantitative and qualitative evidence-based indicators. These indicators will reflect strategies that enabled RTD programmes to envision desirable sustainability futures, and develop means to foresee and overcome obstacles to the realisation of these futures. From these indicators a uniform methodological approach will be developed to evaluate RTD programmes across Europe, and the findings will support recommendations for the creation of pan-European programmes that more effectively integrate scientists, policy makers and stakeholders in the development of more sustainable production and consumption processes.

SERI study on the ecological effects of immigration into Luxemburg

Philipp Schepelmann and Stephan Moll are working on a study for the Environmental Ministry of Luxemburg to evaluate the effects of migration on the environmental pressure to the country.

While Luxemburg has currently a population of around 440.000 the national statistical office is expecting an increase to about 700.000 inhabitants by the year 2050. In a recent poll by Friends of the Earth Luxemburg almost 40% of Luxemburg's population is against any further immigration into Luxemburg. There is a risk that further population growth could have negative consequences on Luxemburg's consumption of resources and quality of life.

In this context SERI has assessed the impact of a population growth on:
1. Energy consumption;
2. Traffic;
3. Built-up area;
4. Waste.

The Austrian website of www.nachhaltigkeit.at is prolonged. Every month a new "theme of the month" is prepared by one of the participating institutions, ÖIN, IUW and SERI.

oikos London invited the SERI president Fritz Hinterberger to a lecture in London. Due to time constraints Joachim Spangenberg had to replace him, giving a lecture on "Labour, Growth and Sustainable Development" at the London School of Economics. The manuscript is available from the SERI homepage.

(The Future of Growth. History of theory, sustainability and perspecitves of a new economy)

Sustainable Development requires considering whether more growth of the economy is possible and desirable. In this context, Die Zukunft des Wachstums (in German) analyses different notions of "stationarity" that have been discussed in economic theory since Adam Smith. The relevance of authors like Mill, Jevons, Keynes and Schumpeter for the current discourse on sustainability is shown. "Strategic sustainable development - selection, design and synergies of applied tools"

Abstract
The number of tools and approaches to develop sustainability is growing rapidly. Sometimes they are presented as if they are contradictory or in competition. However, a systems approach consistent with basic principles and the requirements of sustainability shows that these tools are complementary and can be used in parallel for strategic sustainable development. In fact, it is only when using these approaches outside of the systemic context of sustainability that they become contradictory. This paper is a collective effort of scientists who have pioneered some of these tools and approaches.

The paper maps essential elements for developing sustainability and documents how these elements relate to the application of the respective tools. The objective is to show how these tools and approaches relate to each other and build on each other when used for planning for sustainability.

Further education in ecology

The coordination group environment-sciences/ecology from the universities Bern, Freiburg and Neuenburg is offering widespread possibilities for further education in ecology related subjects.

SustainAbility has announced the launch of its latest report:
Good News & Bad: The Media, Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development. The media is one of the most powerful, yet least trusted and least accountable institutions in the world. And it has a crucial role to play in the transition to sustainability. So SustainAbility decided to take a closer look.
