Home Economist and Nutritionist
Economist Policy Consultant and Research for Sustainable Consumption

Sylvia Lorek (1963) has been working in the field of sustainable consumption, new lifestyles since 1993. She has studied household economics and nutrition (Oecotrophologie) at the Fachhochschule Münster with a focus on environmental and consumer consulting, as well as economics at the Open University Hagen, and the Universities of Münster and Duisburg. The combination of these two disciplines provides her with the tools - the individual micro-economic and the societal macroeconomic perspective - for a well-founded analysis of the contexts, in which the scientific and societal discourses about sustainable consumption take place.

From 1998 to 1999, she has been a researcher at the Wuppertal Institute
for Climate, Environment and Energy, and Project Coordinator for the
German Federal Environmental Agency on "Priorities, Tendencies, and
Indicators of Environmentally Conscious Consumer Behavior." Since 2000
she is working with the Sustainable Europe Research Institute. She is a
member of SusConnect, the European Network of Scientists working on
sustainable household consumption.

Beside the scientific work she is coordinating the task force on
lifestyle of the German NGO Forum of Environment and Development. In this function she is a member of the SPAC Caucase of
the UN CSD and on the board of the international NGO network ANPED (the
Northern Alliance for Sustainability).

She is on the board of the German fair trade labeling initiative TransFair and there responsible for the International Fair Labeling Organisation (FLO).
